The King/Queen of the Hill is a competition within the competition mirrored on the chase for the polka-dot jersey of the Tour des France and the tradition to reward good uphill runners.
How to become the King / Queen
First runner to pass this sign is the ‘King of the Hill’. If you complete the course there’s a bonus prize for the first man and woman past this sign (at roughly 22.6 km near Sallygap).
Before 2023, the King/Queen of the Mountain point was slightly earlier in the race but despite this Tudor Moldovan Mircea holds the men’s record of 1:21:55 run on the current (longer version).
Michelle Kenny (winner 2023) holds the women’s record on the 22.6 km King of the Hill (1:48:30) whereas Aisling O’Connor reached the previous point (at 22.5 km) in 1:43:22 in 2019.
